A Small Step for a Great Leap Forward

“Conducting awareness campaigns on global warming and promoting the use of rain gauges towards disaster preparedness is our advocacy; and preserving the beauty and bounty of Mother Nature is our policy.” These speak of the strong determination and cooperation, the Tabaco National High School’s Project Rain Gauge (PRG) Team has manifested and possessed as they conducted their community outreach program in Tagas, Tabaco City on the 20th day of June, 2011.

Composed of several youth advocates and officers, headed by their President, Glanelle Ivy Cea, the team extended their helping hand to selected youth together with the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan(SK) officials of the said community by conducting series of sessions on global warming awareness, its causes and dreadful effects, actions to make and also tackled on the importance of using rain gauges and little on some preventive and safety measures to  keep in mind when such calamities arise.

In addition, last May 2011, the  PRG President with some other officers, SK,  barangay officials and other people in the community joined their hands in cleaning up the coastal areas of San Lorenzo Beach and the Basud River. Tree planting, barangay clean up, and environmental campaigns were also conducted.

The said activity would never be possible and successful without the guidance and efforts of their ever supportive PRG Team and Division YES-O adviser, Mr. Ronaldo Reyes and Mrs. Aurea Biron. Educating and imparting their knowledge on environmental issues to the residents of Barangay Tagas became their stepping stone towards the attainment of their goals. As Master Cheng Yen taught us, “Do not fear of reaching a distant goal; rather fear of failing to move forward.” Influencing people to change to save the Earth is indeed a big task, however nothing is impossible when there is teamwork and persistence.
