Awareness on Rainfall Monitoring and Online Campaign

Damaged. Deteriorated. Deprived. This is the kind of world we have nowadays. Look around and you can tell that these were caused by the rigorous climate change that brought adverse effect to the environment. Every year at most 20 typhoons enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) and most of them result into loss of the ecological balance. With the natural calamities that we are facing as of now, the Tabaco National High School Project Rain Gauge Team (TNHS PRG Team) decided to promote awareness among the students and to the rest of the community. Is public awareness an effective way to bring back the beauty of nature during the old times? How can these strategies convince the people to put the ideas of saving Mother Nature into action?
Developing environmental consciousness and encouraging citizens to be informed of the importance of knowing the amount of rainfall in the community are the main purpose of the TNHS PRG Team. With the assistance of the different school officials, the PRG Team was able to conduct a campaign in selected sections of different year levels in the school to spark students' awareness on rainfall monitoring as well as its significance in disaster preparedness.

For students to appreciate more about science, the science teachers have integrated rainfall monitoring especially when they discuss about global warming and climate change. Because of rainfall monitoring, acquisition of scientific skills, values and method were developed among the students. The teachers have also integrated rainfall monitoring in the subject  mathematics. This is very evident in recording of data correctly and making graphs out of the data.
Aside from the room-to-room campaign, the PRG Team conducted the PRG contests during the Science Month Celebration. The contest involves poster and slogan making, poetry writing about rainfall monitoring, essay writing and quiz. The said activity really enhanced students' skills in science applying rainfall monitoring concepts.
With the support of the school head , students and other teachers of TNHS, and of course the PRG team, the said activity became a successful one. They now fully understand the scientific concepts behind rainfall monitoring.
The PRG team also actively participated in joining SMART Gimmicks. Last July 25, 2011 we joined the Paint and Design Your Rain Manual Gauge Contest. The creativity of the PRG members in designing the rain gauge was developed and aside from that, the rain gauge itself was freed from rust.
For more people to become aware of the Project Rain Gauge, we have created our Facebook account and encouraged the students, teachers and people of the community to add us in their Facebook accounts.
